Communicating with health professionals

Communicating effectively with our health professionals is not always easy. All too often people are scared to ask their doctors or health professionals questions.  We can be concerned about appearing silly or not understanding.

Sometimes health professionals forget to use every day language and use medical jargon that is confusing.  Sometimes we are so overloaded with information, or the information comes at a time where we’re feeling emotional, and we forget what has been said.

The articles in this section give handy tips and guides that can support you to get helpful information from health professionals and to keep track of it as it changes through patient files and My Health Record.

In the video below, Judi shares her tips about communicating with health professionals and knowing when to be an advocate for the person you are caring for.

Remember
Your doctor and cancer care team are there to help you. It’s okay to ask your healthcare team about your or the person your caring for’s brain tumour and treatment. See this booklet , developed by Brain Tumour Alliance Australia (BTAA), for a quick guide.
